A precision instrument acts as the "nerve endings" of an industrial system, monitoring equipment status through accurate data pulses. In gas-related projects, its mission is critical—it must not only withstand harsh conditions like flammability, high pressure, and extreme temperatures but also ensure operational safety with flawless precision. However, when design plans meet on-site execution, installation challenges often push instruments to their limits.

 

01. High Altitudes and Confined Spaces: The "Extreme Challenges" of Installation

In gas pipeline networks, elevated pipes stretch like industrial arteries. Yet, mounting instruments on pipe racks dozens of meters above ground introduces instability risks:

  • Strict Vertical and Horizontal Alignment: Standards mandate deviations under 2° for vertical and horizontal installation. However, high-altitude work makes precise calibration difficult without proper tools. In one case, rushed installers fixed an instrument without a level, causing persistent measurement errors due to misalignment.

  • The Struggle for Straight Pipe Sections: Design rules require an upstream straight section five times the pipe diameter and a downstream section of at least 250mm. However, in cramped waste heat boiler systems, tight spaces filled with elbows and valves leave little room for instruments, causing erratic readings from turbulence.

  • The Agony of Tight Spaces: Inside narrow RTO units or boiler room gaps, installers work in contorted positions, with tools clanging against pipes. Maintenance becomes a nightmare—technicians struggle to move, sometimes dropping tools that damage instruments.

  • Material and Workmanship Risks: Medium/high-pressure tubing should use argon arc welding, but some resort to cheaper methods, leaving slag that clogs the line. Stainless steel tubing bent improperly traps media, leading to blockages.

  • Slope and Drainage Oversights: Gas measurement requires a 1:10 slope toward the instrument to prevent condensate backflow. Neglecting this corrodes electronics. Conversely, reverse slopes in liquid measurement trap air and freezing readings.

(2) Wiring and Grounding: The "Rules of Order"

  • Shielded Cable Chaos: Mixed grounding systems and tangled shielded wires invite electromagnetic interference, causing wild signal fluctuations.

  • Forbidden Splices: Intermediate cable joints, though banned, sometimes appear due to rushed work, leading to oxidation and signal failure months later.

03. Special Scenarios: Gas and Boiler "Battlegrounds"

04. Instruments’ "Plea": A "Rulebook" for Proper Installation

  • Space Matters: Reserve installation/maintenance space. Use lifts and levels for high work; design access panels for tight spots.
  • Detail Checklists: Inspect welds, verify slopes, segregate grounding systems, and label shielded connections.
  • Training & Accountability: Simulate complex installations, track work via "responsibility cards," and enforce post-installation reviews.

Instruments seek not fame but reliability—to safeguard gas systems with steadfast data. Let "field difficulties" never justify shortcuts, for each reading carries the weight of lives and livelihoods.
